Haaretz: IDF kills 18 Palestinians in Gaza, W. Bank, including 5 children

Israeli security forces struck a range of targets in the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Thursday, killing a total of 18 Palestinians, including five children. Meanwhile, militants in Gaza continued to fire rockets at southern Israel, striking as far north as Ashkelon.

The deaths come a day after IDF troops killed 12 Palestinians and an Israeli was killed in a Qassam rocket strike on a college in Sderot.

Four children - all under the age of 16 and three from the same family - were killed in an IAF strike in Jabalya, a refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian sources said.

Felix Beats Oysterella in Round Two Causeway Royale

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Felix was booked solid at 6pm. Oysterella has empty tables. So we tried Oysterella again and even though they finally got a street sign the other signs were still there: no soap in the bathroom, luke warm gumbo, confused service, $150 for three diners, etc… So Felix won round two by default. Meanwhile Carrabella in west Mobile served seven diners for the same $150 and we had good service and food.

Transit director: Streetcar work could start by November

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

The director of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority said today he hopes construction of a downtown streetcar system will begin in eight months, but he’s still looking for ways to fund the projected $33 million project.

David Hill, the transit authority director, said his aim is to have streetcars operating a 2- or 2.5-mile loop in Birmingham’s city center in 12 to 18 months.

“Anybody who says it can’t be done cannot be a part of the team,” said Hill, speaking at an Operation New Birmingham breakfast.

His comments were applauded by Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, who has promised some city funding for the streetcar system.

While Hill presented two possible routes at today’s meeting, he said the proposals could change.

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

TUSCALOOSA — Demetrius Jemison helped Alabama shake out of a mini-losing slump by hitting for a career-high 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lift the Crimson Tide to a 59-56 victory tonight against Arkansas.

Alabama moves into a four-way tie for third place in the Western Division following Auburn’s lost to Mississippi State. Arkansas dropped to 18-9 overall and 7-6 in the SEC.

Four-way jumble in SEC West

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Get this … Alabama’s basketball team is in position to still finish third in the SEC West.

It was a tough night for Pelphrey and the Razorbacks

Wednesday night’s unsightly — but important — 59-56 home victory over Arkansas pulled the Crimson Tide into a tie with Auburn, LSU and Ole Miss. All four teams are 4-9 in the SEC with three regular season games remaining.

If Alabama is to save its struggling season by accomplishing anything in the SEC tournament, it would be wise for the Tide to finish third or fourth and thus get South Carolina or Georgia in the opening round in Atlanta. Anything worse means bad news in the form of Kentucky, Vanderbilt or Florida in the opening round.

Johnson’s court date set for March 10 … and more

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Alabama defensive back Rashad Johnson is due to appear in Tuscaloosa Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing March 10 at 8:30 a.m.

Johnson was arrested early Saturday morning by Tuscaloosa Police and charged with disorderly conduct at “The Legacy” bar on University Boulevard near campus. Court officials say an attorney has yet to file to represent Johnson at the hearing.

One interesting tidbit: Sources say Johnson served as an intern in the District Attorney’s office earlier in his collegiate career. He probably knows his way around a courtroom and the legal system better than most students, which may be why we’ve heard so little about his side of the story.
