How’s The Economy Doing?
WASHINGTON (AP) - “We’re positioned to bounce back.” That’s the White House reaction to news that the economy shrank in the third quarter. In the strongest signal yet that the country is in recession, the Commerce Department report says the gross domestic product contracted at a 0.3 percent annual rate from July through September. A big cut in consumer spending was a major factor. Consumers reduced spending at a 3.1 percent pace, the biggest cut since 1980. But the White House is downplaying the significance of the numbers. It says they were not unexpected and notes special circumstances, such as hurricanes and the strike at Boeing. (Read the full post about ‘How’s The Economy Doing?’…)

New Guidelines For Priests
VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican has issued new psychological screening guidelines for seminarians - the latest effort by the Roman Catholic Church to be more selective about its priesthood candidates following a series of pedophile scandals. The church says it issued the new guidelines to help church leaders weed out candidates with “psychopathic disturbances.” The guidelines issued Thursday say problems like “confused or not yet well-defined” sexual identities need to be addressed. The Church is struggling to provide enough priests for parishes in many parts of the West because of waning vocations. But Pope Benedict XVI has said it is more important to have good priests than a greater number of priests. (Read the full post about ‘New Guidelines For Priests’…)

Mondays with Saban: Taking care of business
Getty Images It’s all about consistency, Alabama coach Nick Saban likes to stress, which usually goes for his own messages during weekly press conferences. They’ll stay the same no matter the opposition or national polls. “The most important thing is taking care of business week-in, week-out,” Saban said. Your three points from Saban on homecoming week … 1) ARKANSAS STATE ‘HAS A VERY GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM’ Saban didn’t just pay the usual lip service about the next opponent. He used specific examples, such as Red Wolves quarterback Corey Leonard (”as good of a double-threat guy as we’ve played) and defensive end Alex Carrington, a guy “that can play for anybody.” “They run the ball as well as anybody, and they can throw it and make big plays,” Saban said.
