Wild Turkeys of Coastal Alabama Show Up On Thanksgiving

Wild Turkeys of Coastal Alabama Show Up On Thanksgiving
One CATV reader writes that he saw two different groups of wild turkeys on his farm today. What were they doing coming so close to the house on Thanksgiving? Must be suicidal he responded. The uniquely American wild turkey got its name from the   British name for another species the pilgrims remembered from England called the turkey cock poult which was a type of cornish chicken. The name should have been an American name reflecting the noble grand bird that Ben Franklin should be the national bird. A great name like the great American names of our past, Caprice, Electra, Chrysler, Cadillac, Eagle, Royale or anything but turducken. Thanksgiving Table Prayer

Thanksgiving Table Prayer
From this table of plenty we give thanks. We are humble before you. We are grateful for this life, this day, and this moment. For it is in this time we know all time. In this place we know all places. In this grace we know all graces. Our table runneth over with the goodness and mercy. And when we have less, we have more. When we are in trial, we have strength.        When we have doubt, we have knowledge. When we are low, we are destined for new heights. For the man that has had everything, and has lost it all, is the man that has the most to gain. It is only the person of courage that risks sacrifice that can become the person of hope that finds grace. The meek shall inherit the earth. (Read the full post about ‘Thanksgiving Table Prayer’…)

Food Banks in Demand
CHICAGO (AP) - Food banks and shelters across the country are reporting a spike in demand as the tough economic times push more people to charities. The executive director of a shelter in Chicago says among those in line for Thanksgiving dinners were people who helped provide those meals last year. Mary Shaver of the Chicago Christian Industrial League says these were the people who were donating money — “and now they’re asking for help.” A spokesman for Feed America, which coordinates corporate donations to more than 200 food banks, says he’s hearing from them that it’s the worst it’s ever been. Charities are being squeezed from both ends. (Read the full post about ‘Food Banks in Demand’…)

Endeavor Preparing for Return
HOUSTON (AP) - The holiday visit by the shuttle Endeavour’s seven astronauts is ending. They bid farewell to the international space station crew after they ate a Thanksgiving meal together of turkey, cornbread dressing and candied yams. The shuttle is set to undock early Friday and return to Florida on Sunday. The Endeavour crew delivered a new bathroom, kitchenette, two bedrooms, exercise equipment, and a system that purifies urine, sweat and condensation into drinking water. All the gear is needed to double the space station’s population to six next year. Astronauts also performed four spacewalks to clean and lubricate a jammed joint that rotates solar wings in the direction of the sun in order to generate power. Hogs Edge Jaguars

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

For the University of South Alabama men’s basketball team, there’s no time to dwell on the past.

After falling in the final seconds to Arkansas Wednesday in the Coors Classic at the Mitchell Center, the Jaguars will turn around and play host to the USA Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday. The Jags will face Maine in the second of two contests in the opening round, with Tulane and UC Davis meeting at 5 p.m. to start the event.

The consolation contest will also tip off at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the two first-round winners playing for the championship a half-hour after the first game ends.

The Jaguars have dropped their last two outings — both against schools from BCS leagues — after Stefan Welsh connected on a three-pointer with two seconds to go last time out to give the Razorbacks a 79-77 victory. (Read the full post about ‘Hogs Edge Jaguars’…)

Wednesday reading: ‘The group that sort of turned it around’
Associated PressJohn Parker Wilson: “I think the attitude of the team has changed, the way people go about business, whether it’s working out or watching film or the day-to-day stuff we do. It’s a lot different.” There are only nine scholarship seniors on Alabama’s football team — fewer than any other major conference program. But man, they will be missed by the Tide. Senior Day festivites will be held Saturday for: Center and team captain Antoine Caldwell, right guard Marlon Davis, defensive end Bobby Greenwood, safety and team captain Rashad Johnson, tight end Travis McCall, injured receiver Will Oakley, receiver Nikita Stover, tight end Nick Walker and quarterback John Parker Wilson.
