Baseball team falls to 1-3

The boys of … late winter?

Good news first for Alabama baseball at the Southwest Diamond Classic in Frisco, Texas …

The Crimson Tide nearly produced the biggest comeback in school history today. … True freshman Ross Wilson (John Parker’s little brother) produced 4 RBIs and his first collegiate home run. … All nine lineup starters had at least one hit. … And pitcher Casey Kebodeaux rebounded from a tough start Saturday to allow only one earned run in 4 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.

Now the bad news

Alabama lost 10-9 to Texas-Arlington, making the Tide now 1-3 against an early schedule comprised of the Big West and Southland Conferences. … UTA battered UA’s first-time starter Robert Phares for six runs in 3 2/3 innings, building an 8-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. … Pitching remains an issue, as does fielding. The Tide committed four errors, bringing the total to 11 through the first four games.

Poor pitching and defense is almost a certain way to lose in SEC play, of course, but it’s early. Alabama draws Nevada at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Junior right-hander Austin Hyatt (0-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Tide.
