Day one on the Palmetto coast …

Want a good omen for Alabama’s baseball team on NCAA regional weekend?

Horry has been an NBA success since his Alabama career in the early 1990s.

Host Coastal Carolina’s campus is in Conway, S.C., which I learned today is in Horry County.

(OK, so it’s obviously not named for this famous former Crimson Tide basketball player, but it’s the first name I thought about. Seriously, how many people have the last name Horry?)

How about another good — far more applicable — omen?

Alabama coach Jim Wells said before today’s practice at CCU that left-hander Miers Quigley should “be fine” despite a recent spell with back pain. Quigley threw bullpen sessions earlier this week, and although the Tide’s ace probably won’t start a game, he could be used in a key relief role if he’s up to it.

The Tide took a chartered jet to Myrtle Beach this morning and rushed to make its afternoon press conference and practice session at a cozy, very teal Charles Watson Stadium. If you’re curious what the four teams (CCU, East Carolina and Columbia are here too) had to say heading into Friday’s first-round games, click here.

Meanwhile, I’ll have plenty more from Conway in tomorrow’s Press-Register and on the blog throughout the weekend. …
