Football Fans Keep Eye On Gustav
People attending one football game in Mobile County Friday night had a special reason to be wary of Hurricane Gustav.
And they could also sympathize with fans of the opposing team.
The Alma Bryant Hurricanes played host to the Enterprise Wildcats.
Many Bryant fans live in Bayou La Batre, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The city of Enterprise was struck by a deadly tornado eighteen months ago.
Steve Patronas’ home in Bayou La Batre flooded during Katrina.
Other fans suffered losses, too.
Patronas said, “We got some things in totes and we’re sitting there (ready) if it (Gustav) takes an unfavorable turn.”
Christine Mosquito said she’s still repairing her home three years after Katrina.
When asked what she thought about Gustav, she said, “No, I don’t want to think about it.”
Johnny Collier said he’s not too worried about Gustav.
As far as evacuating, Collier said, “We’re probably going to wait until tomorrow, maybe Sunday morning, and see what its going to do.”
Across the field, there were Enterprise fans like Kyle Taylor.
He remembers the day nine people in his city were killed in a tornado.
Taylor said, “March 1. You can never forget March 1. My daughter knew several of the kids that were killed in the tornado. I think for the entire town it was was incredibly challenging.”
Donna Corley of Enterprise said her daughter is a cheerleader and that two fellow cheerleaders were killed in the twister.
When asked if she had any encouraging thoughts for people in south Mobile County as they watch Gustav, Corley said, “We’re just praying for them and hope everything is okay.”
